How to create and assign baselines to projects in Primavera P6?

Updated: Aug 2, 2020

A baseline may be a complete copy of a project set up that you will compare to the current schedule to judge progress. Create a baseline set up, before update a project for the first time. Every baseline is often assigned a type that categorizes its purpose, for instance, initial planning baseline, what-if project set up baseline, or mid- project status baseline. Baseline types are defined by the administrator in the Admin Categories window.

You can compare up to 3 baselines at one time. For instance, you would possibly need to create a baseline of the original project schedule then create two additional baselines at different stages of the project. You’ll compare these to the current schedule to see however the project is progressing according to the project plan. You’ll also create a project baseline to use for summarization.

CREATE PROJECT BASELINE

Open the projects that you want to create a baseline or view assigned baseline projects.

ASSIGNING BASELINES TO PROJECTS

Use the Assign Baselines window to designate the current project or an existing baseline as the project, primary, secondary, or tertiary baseline. The project baseline is often used to summarize a project. The project baseline or primary baseline can be designated as the project to use when calculating earned value. The primary, secondary, and tertiary baselines are user-defined baselines used to compare projects.

COMPARING CURRENT AND BASELINE SCHEDULES

After a project is updated, you’ll quickly judge progress. Use a layout that shows current and baseline bars to spot tasks that start or finish later than planned. A target comparison makes it easy to see variances between the current and baseline dates.
