Introduction to CATIA V5

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

CATIA (Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application). It is one of the leading 3D software used by organizations in multiple industries ranging from aerospace, automobile to consumer products. CATIA is a multi platform 3D software package developed by Dassault System, France. CATIA V5 provides three basic platforms these are P1, P2 and P3. P1 for small and medium size companies. P2 for advanced design engineering companies. P3 for high end design applications (Aerospace and Automotive Industry).

CATIA V5 WORKBENCHES

CATIA offers many workbenches thus are given below

Part Design Workbench:- The part design workbench is a parametric and feature based environment in which you can create solid models. The sketch for the features is drawn in sketcher workbench that can be invoked within the part design workbench. The tools in the part design workbench can be used to convert the sketch into a sketch based feature. You can also assign materials to the model/ design in this workbench.

Wireframe and Surface Design Workbench:- The wireframe and surface design workbench is used to create wireframe or surface models. It is also similar to part design workbench with only difference is the tools. Being that the tools in this workbench are used to create a advanced surface models

Assembly design Workbench:- Assembly design workbench is used to assemble the components using assembly constraints

Drafting Workbench:- Drafting workbench is used to document the assembled parts . Types of drafting

1. Generative drafting – used to automatically generate the drawing views of the assembled drawing or parts.

2. Interactive drafting – need to create the drawing views by sketching them using the sketching tools.

Generative Sheetmetal Design Workbench:- This workbench is used for the designing of the sheet metal components.

DMU Kinematics Workbench:- This workbench is used to design mechanisms by adding joints between the components. You can simulate and analyze the working of the mechanisms dynamically.
